Legacy and Final Years
By 1920, Crowley had established the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily, a headquarters for his followers to experiment with sex, drugs, and rituals. However, a mysterious death during a ritual led to his expulsion from Italy by Mussolini’s government in 1923. Despite this setback, Crowley continued to publish his works and even remarried.
During World War II, he mingled with figures from the intelligence community, but his involvement remained speculative. Crowley’s health deteriorated, and he died on December 1, 1947, from chronic bronchitis. His funeral, dubbed the ‘Black Mass,’ was sparsely attended, reflecting the controversial nature of his life.
Despite his infamy, Crowley’s impact endured, influencing writers, artists, and musicians. His image graced the cover of The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,’ and his motto inspired Led Zeppelin and David Bowie. Occultists remember him fondly, while others view him with skepticism or horror. Regardless, Aleister Crowley’s name continues to be whispered, ensuring his place in history as a figure of intrigue and controversy.
